National Mentorship Month: Key Event Dates and Information

January is National Mentorship Month and aims to connect promising young people with mentors. Launched by MENTOR in 2002: The National Mentoring Partnership and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, National Mentorship Month helps generate buzz around the different paths of mentorship and enlist more people (individuals and organizations, alike) to mentor.

Major non-profit organizations, political figures from various regions, local communities, and businesses of all types participate every year. Celebrities and high-profile individuals often play a major role, as well. Previous supporters have included Usher, Maya Angelou, Clint Eastwood, Senator John McCain, General Colin L. Powell, and Cal Ripken, Jr.

Are you ready to get involved this year? Here are some key campaign event dates you should be aware of:

  • January 4, 2018—I Am a Mentor Day: This day offers volunteer mentors the opportunity to reflect on their efforts and its impact worldwide.

  • January 11, 2018—National Mentoring Month Kick-off Twitter Chat: During the scheduled Twitter chat, users are encouraged to discuss National Mentoring Month and its impact on the local community. Relevant Tweets from previous years can be found under the hashtag #MentorIRL. In the past, organizations such as America's Promise, Disability Mentors, Communities In Schools, Spark, and Encore have all contributed to the discussion. Consider joining the conversation this year to discuss what it means to be a mentor, how mentorship can help young people, and the different forms of mentorship. In particular, you may want to draw from your own experience and talk about the value of mentorships in the small business realm.

  • January 15, 2018—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: This day marks a time to reflect on the inspirational wisdom of Dr. King and the importance of service through volunteerism.

  • January 17, 2018—International Mentoring Day: On this special day, mentoring conversations are set to take place across various social media channels. If you have any photos, videos, or personal stories that you would be willing to share, you should definitely consider taking part in this powerful narrative.

  • January 25, 2018—#ThankYourMentor Day: This event encourages participants to discuss actual experiences, and give thanks to those who offered uplifting support.

These events highlight the powerful impact of mentoring on our society as a whole. As former President Barack Obama declared: "Nobody succeeds on their own: each young person's strength and resilience is fostered by those who have taught them they can do anything they put their mind to. Whether helping mentees study for a test, learn a new skill, or lift their heads up after a setback, mentors provide them the chance they need to move forward and set their sights even higher. And in helping mentees achieve their goals, mentors can inspire them to reach back and provide the same support to someone else in need of a mentor."

National Mentorship Month reminds us that with success comes a responsibility to give back and help others achieve their own dreams. As a small business owner, you can share valuable business lessons and advice with a new generation of aspiring entrepreneurs. If you have always thought about becoming a mentor, this month is the perfect time to take action. By telling others about the struggles you faced when starting your own business, you can help them to avoid making the same mistakes. Similarly, by sharing your wins and the skills you have learned along the way, you can help your mentee start off on the right foot and have a better professional future. Are you ready to get involved?
