Ways to Take Your SEO to the Next Level

Small business success requires several components. You need to be determined. You need to stand by your product or service. You need faith. But above all else, you need to be discovered by your consumer. When customers pull out their phones or key into their computers in search of the service you provide, how do you make sure you’re on the results page? The answer is strongly implemented SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Here are tips to help boost your small business search results by using SEO.

Ways to Take Your SEO to the Next Level

Discover your goal by finding your starting point

If you want to measure the (hopefully) huge hike in website traffic from your customers, you need to find your baseline. There are several pay services that will record this information, but Google Analytics will do almost everything those services do for free. Once you set up your account, Google will ask that you add a code to track each page on your site. After you have added the code, you will gain access to the following useful info:

  • Visitor count
  • Visitor location
  • Visitor demographics
  • Which pages are being visited
  • How much time is spent on a page

Armed with the above analytics, you are more than ready to record any change that occurs as a result of the new SEO strategy you employ.

Keywords are key

Once your baseline is understood, the next step is identifying what keywords to use in order to be found by your future consumer. Jot down up to 100 high-impact words and phrases related to your business. Then, use a keyword-discovery tool to help gauge how often certain phrases are used. Some keyword-discovery tools require several steps, while others are more straightforward. Here are a few free keyword-analyzing tools you can start using right away:

Stand out while staying relevant

In addition to finding which keywords and phrases best match up with the solution you provide to your consumers, you also want to optimize what is searched for so you stand out. Use the tools to distinguish keywords that are a good mix of:

  • Low-difficulty words and phrases — If you are stacking your site with phrases unlikely to be typed or spoken by consumers, you are less likely to find a spot on their results page.
  • Less competitive terms — These will help you standout. You can use SEMrush or Google Keyword Planner to directly compare yourself to others using long-tail keywords (keyword phrases with three or more words). It is next to impossible to find effective keywords with zero competition, but a combination of low, medium, and high-traffic words can contribute to being found easier.
  • High search volume — This is a basic requirement for any keyword you use to help boost site traffic. Although you do not want too much competition, as we just discussed, you still want to maintain components of popular terms for your business. It is truly a balancing act.

Watch what you E-A-T

Ways to Take Your SEO to the Next Level

A high-quality website, according to Google, has a high level of E-A-T (expertise, authority and trust). As the most popular search engine, Google has defined exactly which components need to be included in your site for their algorithm to push your site forward. Sift through the content of your site to ensure you are well represented. Improving your E-A-T can lead to a substantial improvement to your overall Google ranking and likelihood of being discovered by consumers.

Remember, because you are dealing with people, the answers you discover today may not be the answers of tomorrow. To maintain a successful ranking, it is best to keep a watchful eye on trends, ranking technology and search styles. An optimized search engine is something every small business is looking for.
